Electric-assisted or pedal-assisted bicycles must meet the same safety requirements as normal bicycles and must obey the same road regulations. E-bikes are subject to both power and speed limitations, in addition to the rules that apply to bicycles. In Australia, e-bikes must have a motor output of no more than 200w for pedal cycles with a throttle or an electric auxiliary hub driven motor, and 250w when used on a certified pedaled (power assisted pedal) bike. Motors are also restricted to 25 kph, so once you reach 25.1 kph, the electrical help will gradually diminish, allowing you to continue on your own. While the motors installed are typically capable of speeds and power numbers much beyond the legal limit, the restriction is in place for everyone's protection. The United States of America, for example, has distinct rules for different ‘classes' of e-bikes, although it's worth remembering that these might vary from state to state. |
